American BBQ conjures up images of smoking hunks of sizzling steaks, juicy sausages, and charred burgers — each of them bigger than they probably ought to be. Japanese BBQ (called "yakiniku") on the other hand consists of daintily cut strips of marinated beef sizzled over a small grill with an assortment of peppers, onions and vegetables. It's about quality of quantity, and as with just about everything in Japan, it's the quality that keeps us coming back for more.
Snack manufacturer Riska attempts to bring us the quality and decadence of yakiniku in chip form with their newest flavor of Heart Chiple chips. It's BBQ and garlic flavored, which means you may want to brush your teeth an extra time after eating these before you try getting close to anyone.
We don't quite understand the "Chiple" part of the name, but the "Heart" is explained upon dumping a few of the chips out. Take a look! They're heart shaped! How sweet…
Just how well do these chips capture the BBQ flavors they so boldly attempt to mimic?
Not too badly! Each chip is savory with a hint of tanginess, just like the marinated strips of beef they are inspired by. Perhaps these chips can serve as a nice substitute when the wallet can no longer afford the expensive prices of Japanese beef.
